Importing Timecoded Markers into DaVinci Resolve from Playback
Table of Contents
When streaming in Remoto Playback, timecoded markers can be added during a session and later exported for use in DaVinci Resolve.
Playback automatically generates a .csv copy of all markers at the end of each session and emails it to all participants. You can also export the marker list manually at any time while a session is still active.
For details on creating and exporting markers in Playback, see How to Work With Timecoded Markers.
DaVinci Resolve uses .edl files for marker metadata, so the .csv file exported from Playback must be converted before it can be imported.
This article covers:
- Checking your
.csvfile headers to make sure they match DaVinci Resolve’s expected format - Converting your file to
.csvif needed - Converting the
.csvto an.edlfile - Importing the
.edlfile into DaVinci Resolve
Step 1: Create and export Timecoded Markers in Remoto Playback.
For guidance on adding and exporting markers in Playback, see How to Work With Timecoded Markers.
Step 2: Verify and Adjust Your .csv File Headers
- Locate the
.csvfile containing your markers and open it in your preferred spreadsheet application. - Confirm that the file includes columns labeled:
- Timecode In
- Name
- Comment
- If these columns are missing or mislabeled, correct them.
- The Tags column may remain in your file, but it will not be included in the export.
- Save the file when finished.
Step 3: Convert to .csv Format if Needed
If your file has been edited in another application (for example, Apple Numbers) and saved with an additional extension such as .csv.numbers, export or re-save the file as a plain .csv file before continuing.
Step 4: Convert the .csv to an .edl File Using EditingTools.io
Use the free "Marker Converter" on editingtools.io to convert your Playback marker file into a DaVinci-compatible .edl:
- Open the Marker Converter tool.
- Browse and select your marker
.csvfile. - In the From dropdown, scroll to the bottom and select .csv.
- In the To dropdown, select DaVinci Resolve → Markers (.edl).
- Set the Framerate to match your project.
- Click Generate and download the resulting
.edlfile.
Step 5: Import the .edl File into DaVinci Resolve
- Open your DaVinci Resolve project and create or select the desired timeline.
- In the Media tab, right-click your timeline and choose:
Timelines → Import → Timeline Markers from EDL. - Select the
.edlfile you generated and click Open. - The markers will appear in your Resolve timeline at their correct timecode positions.
If you do not see any markers:
- Check that the markers are within the correct timecode range and zoom out of your timeline.
- Make sure a timeline is selected in the Media tab before importing.
- Resolve may ignore special characters in marker names or comments, so simplify these if necessary.
