Technical Alerts & Best Practices

Browser & Network Considerations

⇒ Web Browser (Guest Joining):
For best results, use a supported Chromium-based browser, such as Google Chrome. Safari is not recommended for Guests at this time.

⇒ Streaming over WiFi:
Streaming over WiFi may result in degraded performance due to network variability. A hardwired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended.

VPN / Corporate Network Notice

⇒ Users on a VPN, proxy, or corporate firewall may experience issues with:

  • Password resets
  • New account activation

This is due to network restrictions, not the platform. Complete these actions outside the VPN if possible (e.g., use a mobile device on cellular or disconnect temporarily). More info: Remoto Playback Networking Guide.

Application Behavior & UI Constraints

⇒ Stream Settings While Streaming:
Stream Settings cannot be modified while a stream is active. To make changes, stop the stream, update settings, save, and then restart the stream.

⇒ Playback Application Left Open:
If Playback is left open for an extended period (for example, overnight or over a weekend), the app may become unresponsive. If this occurs, quit and reopen the application.

⇒ "Signed in from another device" Message:
After an unexpected app crash, you may see a message stating that you are signed in from another device. This is expected behavior. Click Yes to proceed and continue signing in.

⇒ Minimum Application Window Size:
Playback Desktop has a minimum supported window size of 1600×900 and is not responsive to a smaller size. If the app does not fit on your screen, adjust your display resolution in macOS System Settings.

Audio Monitoring & Playback

⇒ Bluetooth Headphones:
Using Bluetooth headphones introduces inherent audio latency. This can be adjusted during a live stream using the A/V Sync controls.

Capture & Hardware Configuration

⇒ Capture Method Frame Rate Behavior on macOS:
On macOS, Screen Capture and Application Capture are subject to OS-level frame rate control. The effective frame rate may be variable, regardless of the frame rate selected in Playback settings.

For critical workflows, use Blackmagic or an NDI plug-in with constant bitrate support, as these methods bypass OS-level constraints by directly ingesting the source signal.

For non-critical workflows, where a small tolerance (approximately 5 percent) is acceptable, Screen Capture and Application Capture are suitable options.

New Features

Windows Platform Support

Remoto Playback is now available on Windows. Customers on Windows PCs can install and run the full Remoto Playback desktop application natively, bringing frame-accurate streaming and live conferencing capabilities to teams working across mixed operating system environments. Installation uses a standard Windows MSI installer with Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts, and the application follows the same interface and feature set available to macOS users.

Remoto Capture Agent (RCA)

Remoto Capture Agent is a new companion application that enables Organizers to stream from a remote machine while managing the review session from a separate local computer. The Capture Agent runs as a macOS system tray application and can be installed on dedicated studio workstations or capture nodes by authorized machine room technicians or rental houses before editorial systems are deployed. During session setup, Organizers select the desired Agent and authenticate access through Playback, enabling remote control of streaming without requiring direct access to the workstation hosting the media. This separation offloads heavy capture and encoding to dedicated hardware, improving conferencing smoothness and UI responsiveness on the Organizer's computer. Multiple Capture Agents can be registered per company, providing hot-spare, backup, and multi-source options.

Download the Remoto Capture Agent from remotopro.io.

Unified Streaming Service

Playback's streaming infrastructure has been rebuilt into a single, unified Remoto Streaming Service, replacing the previous mix of streaming backends with one consistent service. Native app participants (macOS, Windows, iOS, Apple TV) now receive full-quality SRT streams, while browser participants receive optimized WebRTC streams. The distinction between different viewer types is eliminated, so all guests get one consistent, high-quality experience regardless of how they join.

Multichannel audio (5.1, 7.1, 16-channel) is supported via the Opus codec for discrete routing, local decoding, and stereo fold-down as appropriate. On iOS, surround sessions are automatically folded down to stereo. On Apple TV, guests can select a stereo pair to listen to, with surround passthrough available when a compatible receiver is connected. The Desktop app supports full 16-channel discrete routing to specific output pairs. Web browsers do not support 16-channel audio; all guests of a mix greater than 7.1 surround must participate via native Playback applications.

Additional Content Sharing

In addition to the Main Stream, any Participant in a Playback session can now share their screen, a specific application window, or a browser tab in real time during video conferences. This is particularly useful during early creative development, when directors and cinematographers may want to share visual references, inspiration, or research while establishing the style and tone of a project with editors, mixers, and colorists. The Organizer controls who can share through an approval workflow, and screen sharing works on both the Remoto Playback desktop application and the browser-based Web client, so there is no need to switch to a separate tool.

Quick Session + Reuse Previous Session Settings

Setting up recurring sessions is now faster. A new Reuse button on the session dashboard lets Organizers clone settings and guest lists from any previous session with a single click. The Quick Session modal now offers two modes: New (from a preset) or From Previous (clone an existing session), with a summary panel showing exactly what will be copied before the session is created. A session picker lets users search recent sessions from the last 30 days, expandable to full session history.

User Profile Redesign

The User Profile has been redesigned from the ground up, replacing the previous pop-up modal with a dedicated full-page layout. Account settings are now organized into clear sections, including Personal Information, Security/MFA, and Workspaces, making it easier and faster to manage individual account details, security settings, and team account access workspaces.

Tahoe Compatibility (macOS 26)

Remoto Playback is now fully compatible with macOS Tahoe (macOS 26). Customers upgrading to Apple's latest operating system will have full Playback functionality on day one, with no action required. This release removes the previous Tahoe compatibility warning from Playback 1.8.

Bug Fixes & General Enhancements

Included in 1.9.0

Audio device list now updates dynamically on macOS: Previously, connecting or disconnecting audio devices while Playback Desktop was open on macOS did not refresh the available device list. New devices would not appear in Preferences or Studio view until Preferences was closed and reopened, or the application was fully restarted. The device list now refreshes automatically when audio devices are connected or disconnected. (REMT-8400)

Known Issues

Playback for Windows

Critical

Application becomes unresponsive when starting a stream on Windows 10: On Windows 10, clicking Start Streaming causes the application to freeze and enter a "Not Responding" state. The app never recovers and must be force-closed via Task Manager. This issue is 100 percent reproducible. Workaround: None at this time. Force-close the application via Task Manager and relaunch. (REMT-10156)

Application becomes unresponsive on Windows during an active session: While connected as a Guest on Windows, the application may become completely unresponsive after sustained interaction with the session UI. This affects both Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Windows 11 hanging more quickly. Once unresponsive, the app does not recover. Workaround: Force-close and relaunch the application. (REMT-10239)

Non-Critical

Guest on Windows sees black camera previews for other participants: When a Guest joins a session from a Windows machine, camera previews for other Guests may render as a black frame. Other participants (on macOS or other platforms) can see each other normally. The issue only affects the Windows Guest's view. Workaround: Ask each affected participant to turn their camera off and then back on. The Windows Guest will then begin receiving their video correctly. (REMT-10234)

Playback for macOS

Critical

Passwordless session email links sign out logged-in users: When a user is already signed in to the Playback Desktop app and clicks an email link to join a Passwordless session, the app silently signs the user out and does not join the session. No error or message is shown. Workaround: Fully quit the app or sign out before clicking the session invite link. (REMT-7860)

No notification or recovery dialog when video source is lost during streaming: When an Organizer is actively streaming and the video source becomes unavailable (for example, the source application is closed or crashes), the video feed freezes but no error message or notification is displayed. The Organizer only discovers the issue when stopping and attempting to restart the stream. Workaround: Stop the stream, open Stream Settings, select a new video source, save, and restart the stream. (REMT-9036)

Non-Critical

Participant List shows incorrect Stream Audio status for Guests: When a Guest disables Stream Audio, the Organizer's Participants tab may still show Stream Audio as enabled for that Guest. This is a display issue only and does not reflect the Guest's actual setting. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-8052)

Guest camera shows no video after enabling it in Studio when "Start with Camera On" was set to off: If a Guest joins a session with Start with Camera On set to OFF and then turns on their camera from the Studio screen, the camera tile remains in a placeholder state with no live video displayed. This affects both the Guest and Organizer views. Workaround: Switch to a different camera in the camera selector and then switch back. The camera will then render correctly. (REMT-10314)

Remoto Capture Agent (macOS only)

Non-Critical

"Quit & Reopen" button does not restart the application: In Remoto Capture Agent, after updating macOS permissions and clicking Quit & Reopen, the RCA application remains open instead of quitting and relaunching. Workaround: Manually quit and relaunch the RCA application. (REMT-10315)
