Timecode Doesn't Reset During Loop Playback in Pro Tools
Learn how to troubleshoot timecode issues that occur during loop playback in Pro Tools.
Table of Contents
Issue
If you're looping a playback range in Pro Tools while using Playback, you may notice that the timecode shown in Remoto does not reset when the loop restarts. Instead, the timecode continues to count beyond the loop endpoint, creating a mismatch between what you see in Pro Tools and what's displayed in Playback. This can directly interfer with using Timecoded Markers.
This is not a bug in Playback. It's a known limitation in how Pro Tools generates MTC (MIDI Time Code) during loop playback.
When this happens
This occurs when:
- You're running loop playback in Pro Tools
- You've launched a session in Playback
- You’re monitoring timecode via Remoto’s on-screen display
What you’ll see
For example, if your loop is set from 00:00:00:00
to 00:03:00:00
:
- Pro Tools loops the segment correctly
- Remoto continues showing timecode beyond the loop point (
00:03:01:00
,00:03:02:00
, etc.)
This can be confusing if you're trying to monitor precise sync during repeated playback loops, and also directly interferes with using Playback's Timecoded Markers function since the timecode won't match the source media on loop.
Why it happens
When loop playback is enabled, Pro Tools continues broadcasting timecode as if playback never looped, rather than restarting the timecode at the loop start. Since Remoto displays the exact MTC stream it receives, the timecode in Remoto will reflect this continuous progression—even though the video and audio have looped.
Workaround
There is no known workaround at this time.
If looped timecode accuracy is essential to your session:
- Use linear (non-looping) playback
- Or, consider creating a pre-looped video for reference outside of Pro Tools
