When you join a Playback session, your internet connection needs to be fast enough to download the live stream and conference audio smoothly.

You do not need to understand video codecs, chroma subsampling, or frame rates.
This guide gives you simple download speed recommendations so you can plan ahead.

Important: Your Organizer controls the stream resolution and codec (H.265 vs. H.264).
If you are unsure what they are using, ask your Organizer before the session.

What matters

As a Guest, your experience depends mainly on:

  • The resolution of the stream (HD, Full HD, 2K, 4K)
  • The video codec used by the Organizer (H.264 or HEVC/H.265)
  • Your available download speed

This article lists worst-case recommended download speeds so you are covered even in less-than-ideal conditions.

Recommended minimum download speeds (worst-case Scenario)

Use the table below to confirm your internet connection is sufficient.

H.264 (Most Common)

Stream Resolution Recommended Download Speed
HD (720p) 5 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) 10 Mbps
2K (1440p) 20 Mbps
4K (2160p) 35 Mbps

HEVC / H.265 (More Efficient)

HEVC delivers the same visual quality at lower bitrates, but not all systems use it.

Stream Resolution Recommended Download Speed
HD (720p) 3 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) 6 Mbps
2K (1440p) 12 Mbps
4K (2160p) 25 Mbps

Not sure what the Session Organizer is using?

If you do not know the stream resolution or codec:

  • Assume H.264
  • Plan for Full HD (1080p)
  • Make sure you have at least 10 Mbps download speed

This will cover most of the Playback sessions you will be joining as a Guest.

What happens when you join a session

Before you enter a session, Remoto automatically runs a Pre-Session Network Test while you are waiting to be admitted to the session.

This test focuses on:

  • Download performance for receiving stream audio and video
  • Network latency and connectivity to Remoto services
  • Playback readiness, including audio output availability
  • Basic system performance, such as CPU and memory headroom

The test typically completes within a few seconds.

If potential issues are detected, Playback displays clear warnings and recommendations before you enter the session. In some cases, you may be asked to acknowledge a warning and continue, with the understanding that audio or video quality could be affected.

This helps reduce failed joins, degraded playback, or mid-session interruptions.Additional recommendations

Additional recommendations

For the best experience:

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection when possible
  • Avoid shared or congested Wi-Fi networks
  • Close bandwidth-heavy applications such as cloud backups or video streaming
  • Use headphones or dedicated speakers to avoid audio conflicts

Quick takeaway

  • Talk to your Organizer about the stream resolution and codec
  • Confirm your download speed meets the recommendations above
  • When in doubt, 10 Mbps download is a safe baseline for most Guests
  • Remoto automatically checks your connection before you join and will alert you if issues are detected
