Technical Alerts & Best Practices

Browser & Network Considerations

⇒ Web Browser (Guest Joining):
For best results, use a supported Chromium-based browser, such as Google Chrome. Safari is not recommended for Guests at this time.

⇒ Streaming over WiFi:
Streaming over WiFi may result in degraded performance due to network variability. A hardwired Ethernet connection is strongly recommended.

VPN / Corporate Network Notice

⇒ Users on a VPN, proxy, or corporate firewall may experience issues with:

  • Password resets
  • New account activation
  • MFA email verification codes (delivery or access delays)

This is due to network restrictions, not the platform. Complete these actions outside the VPN if possible (e.g., use a mobile device on cellular or disconnect temporarily). More info: Remoto Playback Networking Guide.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

⇒ MFA is verified once per signed-in session:
After you successfully complete an MFA challenge (at sign-in or when accessing a protected Team or session), Remoto does not ask again until you sign out or your application session expires.

⇒ Strongest policy wins:
When Personal, Team, Session, and Participant security settings differ, Remoto enforces the strongest applicable requirement. A lower-level setting cannot weaken a higher Team or account policy.

⇒ Backup codes are one-time use:
Store backup codes in a secure location when you generate them. Each code can be used only once. Generate a new set if you lose access to your authenticator app or email codes.

⇒ Protected Teams and sessions may be hidden until MFA is complete:
If a Team or session requires MFA and you have not completed MFA in the current signed-in session, Remoto may hide those items until you pass the challenge (for example, after selecting the Team or opening a protected session).

Application Behavior & UI Constraints

⇒ Stream Settings While Streaming:
Stream Settings cannot be modified while a stream is active. To make changes, stop the stream, update settings, save, and then restart the stream.

⇒ Playback Application Left Open:
If Playback is left open for an extended period (for example, overnight or over a weekend), the app may become unresponsive. If this occurs, quit and reopen the application.

⇒ Signing In on Multiple Devices: If your account is already signed in on another device, Remoto will present an "Active Instance Detected" dialog when you sign in. Choose Full access to take over session control on this device, or Prep access to manage upcoming sessions while your other sign-in keeps running.

⇒ Minimum Application Window Size:
Playback Desktop has a minimum supported window size of 1600×900 pixels and is not responsive to a smaller size. If the app does not fit on your screen, adjust your display resolution in System Settings.
To adjust screen resolution:

  • mac:  Click the Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Select your monitor and choose a scaled size from the thumbnail presets. For a precise list of dimensions, turn on "Show all resolutions" and then choose a resolution for that screen that is greater than 1600x900 pixels.
  • Windows 10: Right-click an empty space on your desktop and select Display settings. Scroll down to the Display resolution section and click the drop-down menu to select your desired resolution.
  • Windows 11: Right-click an empty space on your desktop, select Display settings, and scroll to the Scale & layout section. Next to Display resolution, select your preferred dimensions from the drop-down menu and click Keep changes to confirm.

⇒ Windows SmartScreen Warning (First-Time Installation): When installing Remoto Playback on Windows for the first time, Windows SmartScreen may display an "Unknown Publisher" warning. This is expected for new application certificates and does not indicate a security issue. Click More info, then Run anyway to proceed with installation. This warning will not appear on subsequent installs once the certificate builds reputation. (REMT-10730)

Audio Monitoring & Playback

⇒ Bluetooth Headphones:
Using Bluetooth headphones introduces inherent audio latency. This can be adjusted during a live stream using the A/V Sync controls.

Capture & Hardware Configuration

⇒ Capture Method Frame Rate Behavior on macOS:
On macOS, Screen Capture and Application Capture are subject to OS-level frame rate control. The effective frame rate may be variable, regardless of the frame rate selected in Playback settings.

For critical workflows, use Blackmagic or an NDI plug-in with constant bitrate support, as these methods bypass OS-level constraints by directly ingesting the source signal.

For non-critical workflows, where a small tolerance (approximately 5 percent) is acceptable, Screen Capture and Application Capture are suitable options.

New Features v1.10.0

Configurable MFA Policies

Remoto Playback 1.10 introduces configurable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) so companies and individuals can enforce stronger sign-in and session access controls.

Companies gain granular control through a policy matrix that can be managed at the personal account and Team level, and applied across:

  • Sign-in — Require MFA when signing into Remoto
  • Team selection — Challenge MFA before accessing a protected Team in the Admin experience
  • Viewing sessions in the Dashboard — Challenge MFA before opening or joining a protected session from the Dashboard
  • Joining sessions from email — Enforce the applicable security mode when guests join from an invitation link

Supported verification methods:

  • Authenticator app (TOTP)
  • Email verification codes
  • Backup codes (one-time recovery codes)

How policies work (at a glance):

  • Personal Security — Users can enable MFA in Profile → Security to protect their own account at sign-in.
  • Team Min Security — Team Admins can require MFA for Team access and Team sessions.
  • Team Member Min Security — Admins can require MFA for specific Admins or Organizers, and optionally require MFA for content those Organizers create.
  • Session / Participant Security — Organizers can set session-wide or per-participant security when no higher Team policy already requires MFA.

When multiple policies apply, Remoto uses the strongest requirement. MFA completed during the current signed-in session is remembered until logout or session expiry.

This strengthens Remoto’s security posture for enterprise and studio customers that need consistent MFA enforcement without blocking day-to-day review workflows.

Bug Fixes & General Enhancements

Included in 1.10.1

General (Windows and macOS)

Guests invited during a running session no longer prompted to create an account: Previously, when an Organizer invited a new Guest from within an active session (using the in-session Invite Guests drawer), the Guest could be prompted to activate or create a Remoto account instead of joining passwordless — even when no MFA policy was configured. Guests invited before the session started were unaffected. Playback Desktop now correctly applies the passwordless join policy to all Guests regardless of when they are invited. (REMT-10911)

Included in 1.10.0

General (Windows and macOS)

Team Name Visibility in the Sessions Dashboard: The Sessions Dashboard now shows the Team name associated with each session, making it easier to distinguish Personal sessions from Team Account sessions when you work across multiple accounts. (REMT-10792)

Guided Permission Flow (macOS): Playback Desktop and Remoto Capture Agent on macOS include a clearer guided flow for granting required system permissions (such as screen recording and related capture permissions), reducing setup friction for Organizers and capture machine operators. (REMT-10265)

Capture Agent Streaming Status in Studio: When an Organizer is streaming via Remoto Capture Agent, Studio shows a clearer on-screen status (gradient video with message) so participants can tell that capture is coming from a remote Capture Agent rather than a blank or ambiguous preview. (REMT-10361)

Remoto Capture Agent Preview / Local Monitoring parity: Preview (stream stopped) in Remoto Capture Agent now matches the Local Monitoring design, including audio output controls. Output device, Stereo/Passthrough mode, and channel routing persist between Preview and Local Monitoring and are restored after an app restart. These selections affect local monitoring only and do not change the outgoing stream. (REMT-10565)

Streaming & Capture

Tahoe organizer streams delivered black video / no audio / no timecode to guests: When an Organizer hosted on macOS Tahoe, guests could receive a black screen with no stream audio and no timecode across Desktop, Windows, and web clients for all video sources. Streaming from Tahoe organizers now delivers video, audio, and timecode correctly. (REMT-8588)

Tahoe organizers streamed far below the configured bitrate: On macOS 26 Tahoe, Organizers could stream at roughly ~1.1 Mbps instead of the configured bitrate, causing pixelated video for guests. Bitrate now respects Stream Settings on Tahoe. (REMT-10848)

Switching from Capture Agent to a local video source produced no A/V for guests: After changing Video Input Type from Capture Agent to a local source, starting the stream could deliver no video or audio to guests. Local sources after Capture Agent now stream correctly. (REMT-10508)

Blackmagic SDI audio device missing from Stream Settings: The Blackmagic SDI audio device did not appear in the Stream Settings device list. It is now listed when available. (REMT-10849)

Stream Settings preview black for NDI or Blackmagic: Preview in Stream Settings could show a black screen when Video Input Type was NDI or Blackmagic. Preview now renders for these sources. (REMT-10802)

NDI guests saw a permanent black screen when the stream started before NDI source playback (macOS): If an Organizer started streaming NDI while the NDI source was idle (for example, timeline stopped), guests who joined during that idle period could remain on a black screen even after playback began. Guests now receive video once the NDI source starts playing, without needing to leave and rejoin. (REMT-10838)

Organizer UI warning when RSS SRT publish fails: When the Remoto Streaming Service fails to publish an SRT stream (for example, firewall or handshake timeout), Organizers now receive a clearer in-app warning. (REMT-10754)

B-frames enabled for Unified Remoto Streaming Service: Streaming quality and efficiency improvements via B-frame support in the unified streaming path. (REMT-10392)

Multi-region RSS EC2 launch failover: Backend streaming infrastructure can fail over EC2 launch across regions when a region is unavailable, improving session start reliability. (REMT-10744)

Video Conference / Screen Share

Crash when Organizer started screen share (macOS Intel): Starting screen share as Organizer on some Intel Mac configurations could crash Playback Desktop. Screen share now starts without crashing. (REMT-10418)

Screen share froze when the sharer’s webcam was off-page: Screen share could freeze or stop when the sharer’s webcam tile was not visible on the current gallery page. Screen share now continues correctly. (REMT-10510)

Timecoded Markers

Timecoded marker popup showed a grey icon instead of the category color: When adding a Timecoded marker, the confirmation popup showed a grey icon regardless of marker category (DX, SFX, VFX, MX). The popup icon now uses the correct category color for Organizer and Guests. (REMT-10733)

Sessions & Dashboard

Reuse Session did not retain the source session owner: Reusing a previous session could default to a personal subscription instead of preserving the source session’s owner/account context. Reuse now retains the correct owner. (REMT-10783)

Pending Invitations did not unlock MFA-protected company invites: Users with pending Team invitations could not unlock MFA-protected company invites as expected. Pending invitations now unlock correctly for protected companies. (REMT-10835)

Windows

Studio view blank on some Windows configurations: On certain Windows machines, Studio could render as a blank screen due to a graphics compatibility issue with GL-only preview components. Studio view now loads correctly on the Windows rendering path. Fixed in Playback 1.9.1. (REMT-9815)

Crash when navigating to Preferences on Windows: Opening Preferences could crash Playback Desktop on Windows. Preferences now open without crashing. (REMT-10831)

macOS

Permissions modal appeared incorrectly on launch and logout: A permissions modal regression caused the dialog to appear on app launch and on logout. The modal now appears only when required. (REMT-10313)

macOS app-menu items missing after Windows port work: Some macOS application menu items were missing, and manual update check could show no result. Menu items and update check behave correctly again. (REMT-10808)

Web / Downloads

Team invitation download offered macOS but served Windows installer: On the web Team invitation flow, the download prompt labeled “Playback for macOS” could serve the Windows .msi. The correct installer is now offered for the selected platform. (REMT-10775)

Known Issues

Playback for Windows

Critical

Application becomes unresponsive when starting a stream on Windows 10: On Windows 10, clicking Start Streaming causes the application to freeze and enter a "Not Responding" state. The app never recovers and must be force-closed via Task Manager. This issue is 100 percent reproducible. Workaround: None at this time. Force-close the application via Task Manager and relaunch. (REMT-10156)

Application becomes unresponsive on Windows during an active session: While connected as a Guest on Windows, the application may become completely unresponsive after sustained interaction with the session UI. This affects both Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Windows 11 hanging more quickly. Once unresponsive, the app does not recover. Workaround: Force-close and relaunch the application. (REMT-10239)

Non-Critical

Guest on Windows sees black camera previews for other participants: When a Guest joins a session from a Windows machine, camera previews for other Guests may render as a black frame. Other participants (on macOS or other platforms) can see each other normally. The issue only affects the Windows Guest's view. Workaround: Ask each affected participant to turn their camera off and then back on. The Windows Guest will then begin receiving their video correctly. (REMT-10234)

Camera preview remains blank in Preferences after selecting a camera device (Windows only): On Playback Desktop for Windows, selecting a camera device in Preferences may not display a live preview. The camera tile remains blank despite the device being selected. Camera functionality during sessions is unaffected. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-10365)

Playback for macOS

Critical

Passwordless session email links sign out logged-in users: When a user is already signed in to the Playback Desktop app and clicks an email link to join a Passwordless session, the app silently signs the user out and does not join the session. No error or message is shown. Workaround: Fully quit the app or sign out before clicking the session invite link. (REMT-7860)

No notification or recovery dialog when video source is lost during streaming: When an Organizer is actively streaming and the video source becomes unavailable (for example, the source application is closed or crashes), the video feed freezes but no error message or notification is displayed. The Organizer only discovers the issue when stopping and attempting to restart the stream. Workaround: Stop the stream, open Stream Settings, select a new video source, save, and restart the stream. (REMT-9036)

Audio gaps in the Playback stream on Apple silicon (Ventura / Sequoia): On some Apple silicon Macs running macOS Ventura or Sequoia, the audio stream may contain noticeable gaps approximately every 2–3 seconds for both Organizer and Guest. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-7222)

Crash when switching video input from Blackmagic to NDI during an active session (Intel Organizer): On some Intel Mac Organizer machines, changing Video Input from Blackmagic to NDI and reviewing Stream Preview during an active session can crash Playback Desktop. Workaround: Avoid switching from Blackmagic to NDI mid-session when possible; stop the session before changing input type if a switch is required. (REMT-10212)

Non-Critical

Participant List shows incorrect Stream Audio status for Guests: When a Guest disables Stream Audio, the Organizer's Participants tab may still show Stream Audio as enabled for that Guest. This is a display issue only and does not reflect the Guest's actual setting. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-8052)

Guest camera shows no video after enabling it in Studio when "Start with Camera On" was set to off: If a Guest joins a session with Start with Camera On set to OFF and then turns on their camera from the Studio screen, the camera tile remains in a placeholder state with no live video displayed. This affects both the Guest and Organizer views. Workaround: Switch to a different camera in the camera selector and then switch back. The camera will then render correctly. (REMT-10314)

Stream Preview does not update after changing video source in a Started session: After a session is Started, changing the Streaming Video Source in Stream Settings may not update Stream Preview — the preview can continue showing the previously selected source even after Save. Preview updates correctly while the session is still in Ready state. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-9169)

Advanced Encoding Settings cannot be changed during a live session: Advanced Encoding Settings are not interactable while you remain in a live session, even if streaming is stopped. Workaround: Leave the session, adjust Advanced Encoding Settings, then start a new session (or re-enter) and start streaming. (REMT-10781)

Video Conference / Screen Share

Non-Critical

Webcam and screen share cannot be active at the same time: When a participant starts screen sharing, their webcam tile may drop to initials for other participants. Camera and screen share currently share a single publish path, so both cannot display live at once. Workaround: None at this time. (REMT-10400)

Pending guest’s camera tile may show another guest’s screen share: If two guests request screen share at the same time and the Organizer approves only the first, the pending guest’s camera tile may incorrectly display the active screen share instead of their webcam (observed on Desktop and web). Workaround: Have the affected participant stop sharing and re-request screen share individually. (REMT-10870)

Web Joining

Non-Critical

Web guest may see the sharer’s camera instead of the shared screen: In rare cases (hard to reproduce; observed after a failed first screen-share attempt), a browser guest may see the Desktop sharer’s camera preview in place of the shared screen. Workaround: None confirmed; try refreshing or rejoining the session. (REMT-10399)

Remoto Capture Agent (macOS only)

Non-Critical

"Quit & Reopen" button does not restart the application: In Remoto Capture Agent, after updating macOS permissions and clicking Quit & Reopen, the RCA application remains open instead of quitting and relaunching. Workaround: Manually quit and relaunch the RCA application. (REMT-10315)

Remoto Capture Agent

Non-Critical

"Quit & Reopen" button does not restart the application (macOS): In Remoto Capture Agent, after updating macOS permissions and clicking Quit & Reopen, the RCA application remains open instead of quitting and relaunching. Workaround: Manually quit and relaunch the RCA application. (REMT-10315)
